COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Global Health Leadership Forum is an offering from the University of California Berkeley in conjunction with Cambridge University and Universitat Pompeu Fabra. The Global Health Leadership Forum is a unique certificate-based international health program focusing on key health policy and management issues. Participants grapple in a practical manner with the health policy issues and options that have been converging internationally. They learn policies and management/leadership approaches that work, find out which approaches have been tried and have not been successful, and learn about current innovations. The program also teaches strategies for effective policy implementation and management.

The curriculum includes renowned senior faculty and guest speakers located in stimulating venues with histories of health care innovation: California and the United Kingdom.

In consultation with expert faculty, participants will select a project based on "real world" country or company issues. Participants continue to work with faculty advisors during the six month interim between each session.

SAMPLE CURRICULUM ISSUES INCLUDE:

Workshops on leadership and evidence-based management.
Effective policy implementation and strategies for health systems change.
How to assure quality.
Public vs. private health insurance mix.
Innovations in payer and health delivery connections.
Lessons learned from managed care techniques / innovative budgeting techniques.
The use of risk adjustments for a variety of purposes.
Pharmaceutical innovation and regulation.
Defining benefit packages including explicit priority setting / rationing.
Making use of the new consumerism.
"Information therapy" prescriptions for consumers.
Preparation for technology changes and future health care predictions.
Workshops on infectious disease preparedness and health care ethics.
IT and care management systems including field trips to Kaiser Permanente and the UK's National Health Service.

$10,000 USD per session (includes $6,000 for academic fees and $4,000 for hotel, meals, field trips, and outside speakers)

Scholarships are available. Special scholarships for qualified world bank contractors and employees.
